The 2012 French Singles Chart

Newcomers ruled the French singles chart in 2012, as the best-selling song was “Ai Se Eu Te Pego” by Michel Teló (around 297,000 sales). The song reached the top spot for the first time in the week ending 22nd January and stayed there for nine non-consecutive weeks. “Ai Se Eu Te Pego” was in the top 10 for 17 weeks.

“Somebody That I Used To Know” is at two for Gotye featuring Kimbra, that song was number one for nine consecutive weeks in April and May and spent a total of 23 weeks in the top 10. Carly Rae Jepsen is at number three with “Call Me Maybe”. It spent a 2012-record of 11 weeks at the top from June to September and was in the top 10 for 26 weeks. Her “Good Time” (with Owl City) is at number 52 in 2012.

The last number one of 2012 is at number four, PSY‘s “Gangnam Style” was at the top for four weeks, two in October and two in December. It was in the top 10 for 14 weeks. Adele is at five with “Skyfall” which was number one for six weeks in November and December and spent 13 weeks in the top 10. In 2011, Adele had two songs in the top five, “Rolling In The Deep” at two (number 38 in 2012), and “Someone Like You” at four (number 15 in 2012).

“I Follow Rivers” only reached number four in March and April but is at six in 2012 for Lykke Li, the song spent 11 weeks in the top 10. Lana Del Rey is at seven with “Video Games” which was number two in March during its 16 weeks in the top 10. Her “Born To Die” is at number 97 for 2012. Shakira is at eight with “Je L’Aime A Mourir”, the song was number one for four weeks in January and stayed in the top 10 for 14 weeks (I don’t count the weeks in 2011).

There are three songs in the top 20 for Sexion D’Assaut, “Wati House” at 20, “Ma Direction” at 17, and “Avant Qu’Elle Parte” at 9. They all reached the top five. “Avant Qu’Elle Parte” was number three for nine (!) non-consecutive weeks and 16 weeks in the top 10. In 2011 Rihanna was number nine with “Man Down”, she is number ten with “Diamonds” in 2012. “Diamonds” spent 14 weeks in the top 10 and was at the top for three weeks in September and October. Rihanna‘s “Where Have You Been” is at number 23.

The other number one songs in 2012 are Tacabro at 13 with “Tacatà”, Gusttavo Lima with “Balada” at number 14, C2C‘s “Down The Road” at 16, “Bara Bará Bere Berê” at number 41 for Alex Ferrari, and Mylène Farmer with “A L’Ombre” at 95.

Some songs in French had a great success, “Le Sens De La Vie” is at number 21 for Tal, le Collectif Paris-Africa Pour l’UNICEF is at 32 with “Des Ricochets”, “Positif” at number 35 for Matt Houston featuring P-Square, Shy’m at 36 with “Et Alors !”.

Some artists have several songs in the top 50. Pitbull is at 19 with “Back In Time” and at number 42 with “International Love” (featuring Chris Brown). David Guetta and Sia (as a featured artist) have “Titanium” at number 27 and “She Wolf (Falling To Pieces)” at 31. “This Is Love” (featuring Eva Simons) is at number 33 for will.i.am who is also at number 47 with “Scream & Shout” (featuring Britney Spears).

Week Ending 8th July 2012

Like the other “big” charts in the world, the French singles chart is rather static this week, but we can see some unexpected things. Not at the top though, where we can still find Carly Rae Jepsen who is number one for a third non-consecutive week with “Call Me Maybe”. It’s her second best week in terms of sales figures (9348, +5%) : not bad for a song which is in its 11th week in the top 10.

The unexpected starts now, as Tacabro is back at 2 (from 3) with “Tacatà”. After a 13% fall last week, its sales figures are back up (8672, 82 more sales) in its 9th week in the top 10. I thought that Flo Rida would be very close to the top this week, but I was wrong, as sales of “Whistle” are down for the first time (8288, -5%) and the song is down a place at 3.

Good news for Shy’m, as she still climbs the chart, from 5 to 4 with “Et Alors !” in her second week in the top 10 (7853, +12%). “Et Alors !” equals the best chart position of “Victoire” which was also at number 4 for three consecutive weeks in February and March 2007. “Si Tu Savais” remains (for the moment) her best charting single, peaking at number 2 in January 2009.

Another unexpected move in the chart this week is the one from Birdy whose “Skinny Love” is back up two places at 5 (7033) in its 9th week in the top 10. The sales of Pitbull‘s “Back In Time” are falling for the first time, as the song is down two places at 6 in its 6th week in the top 10 (6923, -3%).

The 7-9 positions are rather static, as Gusttavo Lima is down a place with “Balada” at 7 in his 10th week in the top 10, “Rayos De Sol” is still at 8 for Jose De Rico featuring Henry Mendez, and “Ma Direction” is a non-mover at 9 for Sexion D’Assaut in its 7th week in the top 10.

Gotye is back in the top 10 ! Last week I wondered if he could come back in the top 10 with another song, and he’s already back !… with “Somebody That I Used To Know” (featuring Kimbra). Sales figures are even up this week (5093, 23 more sales), as the song is up a place at 10 in its 19th week in the top 10.

“Payphone” is very close to the top 10, as Maroon 5 (featuring Wiz Khalifa) is up a place at number 11 (5015 sales, +1%). “Addicted To You” is another top 20 hit for Shakira, indeed she’s up 12 places at number 20 (2987 sales, +52%), she was at the top of the French singles chart for seven non-consecutive weeks with “Je L’Aime A Mourir” in December 2011 and January 2012.

The former UK number one “This Is Love” is up 17 places at number 29 for will.i.am featuring Eva Simons (2412 sales, +59%), it’s a good week also for Katy Perry whose “Wide Awake” climbs 7 places at 33 (2171 sales, +30%).

Céline Dion is back in the French singles chart ! But she enters the chart at a rather low number 32 with her new song “Parler A Mon Père” (2234 sales).

It’s a very bad week for Muse, their new song “Survival” is down a massive 66 places in its second week, from 18 to 84 (863 sales, -72%) !

Have a very nice week !
