The big news this week is that we have a new number one ! And it’s… Alex Ferrari with “Bara Bará Bere Berê”. The song’s chart run has been incredible, indeed “Bara Bará Bere Berê” only spends its fourth week in the chart (34-7-3-1) ! So it’s a big achievement, but the bad news is that Alex Ferrari has the lowest sales figures for a number one single since the downloads have been included in the French singles chart in the week ending 30th January 2011. He only sold 6218 copies (+23%), which is less than the 6879 copies Carly Rae Jepsen sold with “Call Me Maybe” in the chart last week ! We can compare with last year’s chart : in the week ending 21st August 2011, Alex Ferrari would only be at number 4 behind Rihanna with “Man Down” (8467 sales), LMFAO featuring Lauren Bennett & GoonRock with “Party Rock Anthem” (6788 sales), and Mika with “Elle Me Dit” (6398 sales).
So Carly Rae Jepsen‘s reign at the top is over (for the moment, nobody knows), after eight non-consecutive weeks at number one, “Call Me Maybe” is down one place in its 17th week in the top 10 (6152 sales, -11%).
Has “This Is Love” lost its chances to reach the top of the chart ? Indeed, it’s down one place at 3 in its fourth week in the top 10, but everything is not lost for will.i.am (featuring Eva Simons) because the sales figures are better than in last week’s chart (5595, +5%). “Wati House” is still climbing the chart, it’s up one place at 4 for Sexion D’Assaut in its third week in the top 10 (4545 sales, +1%). It’s also a very good week for R.I.O. featuring Nicco, “Party Shaker” is up four places at number 5 in its third week in the top 10 (4294 sales, +9%). Pitbull is back up a place at 6 with “Back In Time” in his 12th week in the top 10.
Do we have a new contender for the number one spot ? It might be the case, as DJ Mam’s is up 9 places from 16 to 7 with “Zumba He Zumba Ha” with 3723 sales. We can think that Birdy is not a contender anymore, however her “Skinny Love” is back up two places at number 8 in its 15th week in the top 10. There are two former number ones for the rest of the top 10, as “Tacatà” is down a place at 9 for Tacabro in its 15th week in the top 10, and… “Somebody That I Used To Know” is back up two places at 10 for Gotye featuring Kimbra in its 23rd week in the top 10.
Two songs drop out of the top 10 this week. Shy’m is down five places at 11 with “Et Alors !” after seven weeks in the top 10 (3414 sales, -23%). It’s more surprising to see the massive fall (from 4 to 15) of Jose De Rico featuring Henry Mendez with “Rayos De Sol”, indeed they were slowly climbing the chart during their eight weeks in the top 10 (10-8-8-7-6-6-5-4).
It’s a good week for M83, “Midnight City” is up six places at 21 in its 29th week in the chart. “Good Time” gets its highest chart position this week, as it’s up four at number 22 for Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen. It’s worth noticing that Alex Clare is up a massive 13 places at 28 with “Too Close” in his second week in the top 50 (2243 sales).
What about the songs featured in the Olympics closing ceremony ? The most popular is “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush (number 24 in December 1985) who is up 107 places at number 64 (935 sales). One Direction‘s “What Makes You Beautiful” (number 39 in March) is also up from 155 to 84 (751 sales). There are also some re-entries in the top 100, Oasis at 79 with “Wonderwall” (number 10 in January 1996), Muse at 87 with “Survival” (number 18 in June). Emeli Sandé gets a new entry at number 88 with “Read All About It (Pt. III)”. George Michael enters only at number 112 with “White Light” (583 sales), and “Wannabe” ( number one for three weeks in September and October 1996) is a re-entry for the Spice Girls at number 173 (349 sales).
Number one in the US this week, Taylor Swift is a new entry at a low number 108 with “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (612 sales). But it’s not very surprising, as she has been successful in France with only one song, ” Love Story” which reached number 14 in July and August 2009.
